Usually I have x-plane start my flights with the engine running, but yesterday I tried manually starting. I was unsuccessful. I had power on, avionics off, fuel on left, aux pump on, mixture rich, slightly advanced throttle, 13 gals in tank. I tried with, and without carb heat as the outside temperature was -5C.
Is there a secret?

Is there a secret? Hi there! Just tested it in your reported condition (OAT -5C). Everything works as expected. I can suggest to check conflict between throttle/mixture hardware, making sure that the mixture is indeed fully opened. Let me know if you are still having issues with it! JMH

I found this sure fire "will not start" checklist:
1) Master Power: On 2) Fuel: Left or Right 3) Aux Fuel Pump: On 4) Mixture: Rich 5) Open Cockpit 6) Yell "I'm gonna light this baby up, so stand back" 7) Pan view left to rear, return to default forward, Pan view right to rear, return to default forward 8) Verify Brakes 9) Mags to START (then BOTH)
Maybe if the Aux fuel pump is running for 35 seconds or more before starting, the carb gets flooded? There seems to be no way to start after that.
If I turn the Aux Fuel Pump on right before START, all is well. (It seems ok if I don't turn it on at all also, but the POH says On.)
For anyone that comes after: POH:
COLD START 1) Pump throttle once or twice 2) Mag(s) OFF 3) Mixture to rich 4) Power on 5) Aux fuel pump ON 6) Brakes - verify 7) Starter switch – On then magnetos to BOTH

I’ve also had the same startup issue. To overcome I turn on the pump for only a couple of seconds then off, or not at all. Leaving the pump on for much longer seems to flood the engine although I don’t know if this would be simulated. Pumping the throttle also seems to do this although its random, best position is slightly open, pump off.

Yes. If the aux fuel pump is set to ON for prolonged time while the engine is not running, it will flood the engine (it is being simulated). So it is advised to operate it before takeoff, when flying in rough weather, and set it off before shutting down the engine.

I found this sure fire "will not start" checklist: Hi there! It has been a while...apologize for not getting back to you...must have been slipped away... Anyways I've just explained this in my previous reply up here.
